The Go-West-Drive_In………….. I remember being chased by the defensive line-man for the Griz NAKED, because I interrupted him and his date doing…..well you know. He chased me back to the concession stand, beat on the door NAKED, and tried to jump upto the roof. I let off a round out of our shotgun and he still keep trying to beat the door down. The sheriff arrested him and his naked girl drove the car out of the lot. The coach of the Griz called that morning asking for me to drop the charges so he could play the game that Saturday. I am a team player, so I did. He came and cleaned the lot every weekend for a month as his penalty….. lol
Rollercoaster Road was never the Frenchtown Highway. Mullan Road was originally the road, then replaced by Broadway out to the Wye.
Tom, That is correct. People get confused on that. It was originally the Mullan road that led West to Frenchtown, Mullan Idaho and beyond. Then came old Hiway 10 which runs past the airport. Then in the 60’s my father was helping build the freeway to the north of Missoula. My family “Howers” lived in a house on 2nd St North that is now under the Orange St West ramp.
I think that the State had a train ride under the screen in the 50s and the Mountain View had a live pony ride. This made going to the drive-in fun for little children.
When I was a little girl we went to the mountain view a lot on Fridays as I got older we began to go to the Go West. In high school the State was the place to be on Saturday night. It is a shame that they are gone
I used to cruise in my 1976 Chevy Malibu and I remember taking my girlfriend out past the Love Rollercoaster Road..how this column jogs the memory.
