Spider’s Maverick Bar (in business from the late ’40s to 1969) was owned by Spider McCullum, a Missoula boxer and boxing coach who died in 1969 of an ax blow to the head for which murder one David Tamietti was convicted and sent to prison.
The Maverick Bar (at left) on Woody Street circa 1968.
Spider’s was located in what had been the Helena Hotel, a wooden building built in the 1880s, which was later overlain with brick veneer. According to a local historian, this rather unstable arrangement is the reason it had to be torn down.
Same area today, site of razed Maverick’s. Evidently, when the area was rehabilitated during the 1980s and 90s, the other buildings on the block were left standing partly because they had walls of solid brick.

Ditto. Spider is on the right.
Spiders was on woody st. My father owned that building for many years. It also had rooms upstairs. There were paintings on the wall itself. The floor was black & white. A large beautiful bar with a brass foot rail.
My name is Johnathon McCallum Spiders grandson and I think it’s great seeing all the pictures of my family history and having others interested but the one thing I would really like to know is what exactly happend and why there are lots of different stories out there but one thing I do know if I took all the negative I’ve heard “which none of I believe”and put it all together it’s really not that bad and even nothing when comparing to axe murderers but still I hear of people trying to justify his death and even it not being many like 1 in a1000 it still bothers the hell out of me so leaving it at that all I can say is never turn your back on anyone because those same kind of sick people are out there and unfortunately in most cases it’s the ones you would never expect!!!

You know you’ve made quite the name for yourself as well Johnny Law! I know everybody in elementary
School through high school and beyond looks up to you, idolized you, and acceptance and respect is almost a given when people find out that you’re my uncle. Definitely wish I would’ve been able to meet The Champ himself. 16 ko’s and only knocked out 4 times earlier. It’s too bad that man took his life from him. I think about the McCallum bloodline and I’m definitely proud to be a part of the clan. I love you guys. PS.. there’s a book written about his life. We should all read it.
Was there ever a rocking horse saloon in the Southgate mall
I have a postcard of Spider with him writing on the back of it and signing it.
You should email it to me! I’m his great grand daughter!
